Plaisance will have a new look next year. Travelers will be able to discover a new airport next year. The construction work which started at the start of 2010 is advancing at great speed and should be completed at the end of 2012.
Once completed, the new terminal will cost the trifling sum of 300 Million dollar. The airport will be the most modern in the Indian Ocean and will house duty free shops. Serge Petit, the director of Airports of Mauritius Limited ( AML ) indicated that the new airport will also be equipped with the latest technology.
AML has also invested Rs 1.2 billion in the renovation of the runway. The work has been 50% completed and will be ready by July 2012. The Plaisance will also be equipped with of an urgency runway ( parallel taxiway ) which could be used as a runway in case the main one is closed. These work should be completed by June 2013 and will cost Rs 1,3 Billion.
Serge Petit has also talked about the recent acquisition of a support system for air navigation which has cost Rs 17 Million. The equipment which is called Offset Localiser is an important instrument for pilots. This will allow them to position the airplanes and to ease landing during poor visibility caused by bad weather conditions. Without this instrument, the airplanes had to turn back towards Reunion airport.
